The video of Atlanta coach Arthur Smith was perfect—eyes wide open in horror, mouth agape, hands to his head. All I could think was, The league is headed for flag football if that’s a penalty. “If you can’t tackle the quarterback, ” Tony Dungy said on NBC Sunday night, “it’s going to be impossible to play defense. ” I've seen a lot of #NFL football in my life, but someone is going to have to explain this roughing the passer call in the @AtlantaFalcons / @Buccaneers game. I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like this pic.
twitter. com/YvmekNYxG2 — Scott Pioli (@scottpioli51) October 9, 2022Another former official told me Sunday night: “Officials aren’t immune from what’s going on in public, and of course they’re following the Tua story. But I can’t imagine making a call, or not making one, because of a situation like [the Tagovailoa story] hanging over the game.
”The roughing call was stunning because Boger’s a good official, and because officials are told to have situational awareness. Don’t decide the game on a ticky-tack call. The Tagovailoa mistake—allowing him back in a game after he struggled to stand twice and had to be helped off the field—shouldn’t be over-corrected by either of the calls that happened Sunday. If Bridgewater really was woozy, then let’s see some evidence from the spotter or from a CBS replay.
Monday Night Football: Raiders vs Chiefs: Time and how to watch online and on TVThe Las Vegas Raiders will look to improve their 1-3 standing in the AFC West when they travel to Kansas City in Week 5 to take on the Chiefs. Monday Night Football will kick off at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium at 8:15 p. m. ET / 5:15 p. PT on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022. Where can I watch Raiders vs.
RUN TO THE CARR: Carr ran for a career-high five first downs last week for the Raiders. Two came on short-yardage sneaks and three more on scrambles as he ran for 40 yards, his most productive day on the ground since 2017. And if defenses continue double-teaming Adams, Renfrow and Darren Waller, Carr intends to keep running. “I take it upon my shoulders and find a lane and go, ” he said. “It’s definitely something I’m conscious about. ”RED ZONE WOES: The red-zone issues that have plagued the Raiders in recent years still haven’t been solved, despite a new coaching staff and an upgraded roster. The Raiders have converted 44% of their red-zone drives into touchdowns, tied for fourth worst in the NFL, and they are fourth worst on defense, too, allowing TDs on 76. 9% of red-zone drives.
Mahomes is due for at least one a game. The trick is to make sure that one incredible play doesn’t set the tone for the rest of the night. It’s what makes facing the Chiefs (3-1) such a daunting challenge. And unless you’re facing them, it’s also what makes them so much fun to watch. The Raiders (1-3), who are coming off a much-needed win over Denver, have some playmakers of their own on offense, and it will be up to Derek Carr and the rest of them to keep up with Kansas City’s second-ranked scoring offense. Josh Jacobs is coming off arguably the best game of his career, catching five passes while running for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
Could the spotter and the ref who made the phantom roughing call both have been erring on the side of extreme caution? That’s sure how it looked to me. “I thought of it too, ” former NFL VP of officiating Dean Blandino said Sunday night. “Are we being overly sensitive because of the Tua Tagovailoa situation? ”The line of the night came from a longtime NFL executive.
“What’s that thing you guys in the media do every week after the games? ” he said. “Overreaction Monday? As a league, I think today was Overreaction Sunday. ”I still don’t know the real story of Miami quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s removal from the Dolphins’ game at the Jets after one offensive snap. In the irony of ironies, Bridgewater, Tagovailoa’s backup, was tackled hard on Miami’s first play and left the game for the locker room. He never returned. We were told the injury spotter in the press box saw in Bridgewater some ataxia; the QB was somehow unstable, per the spotter.
ChiefsBoth teams are fresh off victories in Week 4: the Chiefs prevailing over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-31, and the Raiders earning their first win of the season by defeating the Denver Broncos 32-23. The two teams have a long-standing rivalry, having faced each other in 126 matchups. The Chiefs are clearly in the lead, with the win-loss record standing at 70-54-2 in their favor. This domination became more marked in the last two decades, when KC won almost every game against the Raiders.
In accord with the 20-hour-old NFL rule about motor instability—the rule that came into effect at 5 p. m. ET Saturday—Bridgewater was ruled out for the game. Maybe Bridgewater did stumble, but we never saw it. The Dolphins never saw it. CBS replays never showed it. ESPN reported he passed all concussion tests, but it didn’t matter. Bridgewater, after one snap, was finished. And then, with three minutes left in a 21-15 game in Tampa, on a simple sack by Atlanta’s Grady Jarrett of Tom Brady, referee Jerome Boger called roughing on Jarrett.
“It comes down to being locked in and knowing your assignment and being disciplined enough to go execute, ” Adams said. PRIME TIME: The Chiefs are playing in prime time for the third time — one Thursday, one Sunday and now Monday — in their first five games. But don’t think for a moment they don’t like the spotlight. Kansas City has won its last five Monday night games while Mahomes is 6-1 as a starter in such high-profile contests. STINGY DEFENSE: Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense earned most of the plaudits for their 41-31 win over the Buccaneers, but all the defense did last week was allow a franchise-low 3 yards rushing on six carries to Leonard Fournette and Co. “The thing that makes me most excited is the influx of young guys we’ve got, and those guys have an opportunity to grow and get better, ” Chiefs coach Andy Reis said. “If you keep working and do it day-in and day-out, and work, you have a chance to be something special.
What TV channel is Monday Night Football tonight? Live stream, time, how to watch Chiefs-Raiders onlineThe Las Vegas Raiders face off with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Oct. 10. The game will be live streamed on fuboTV (free trial) and DirecTV Stream (free trial). There was a play last Sunday night at Tampa Bay when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did a pirouette away from a defender, then flicked a pass to Clyde Edwards-Helaire standing in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. It was the kind of play that perhaps only Mahomes can make, and he made it look easy. The way Raiders coach Josh McDaniels sees it, those kinds of did-you-see-that plays are going to happen, probably again when the AFC West rivals face each other Monday night.
Kansas City Chiefs vs Las Vegas Raiders: Live stream, TV info, start timeAre you thinking what I’m thinking? That we had two events in Sunday’s NFL games—a player being removed because an injury spotter thought he saw him wobbly/shaky after a hit, and a hugely ticky-tack roughing-the-passer call—that really weren’t connected but seem connected by the jittery approach to concussions and player safety that has exploded in the last two weeks.
